EU conservatives nominate Von der Leyen for the European Commission's president

European conservatives supported the candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen for the position of president of the European Commission.

Ursula von der Leyen may lead the European body for a second time

As noted, the leading EU political group, the centre-right European People's Party (EPP), has voted to support Ursula von der Leyen as its candidate for the position of European Commission president. It happened today, March 7, at the party congress in Bucharest.

Four hundred delegates supported Von der Leyen's candidacy, 89 were "against".

Ursula von der Leyen has headed the European Commission for the past five years; this may be her second term in this position. The decision will be made after the European parliamentary elections in June 2024.

Today, Ursula von der Leyen spoke at Bucharest's European People's Party congress. She moved on to her election campaign and outlined the main tasks.

Among other things, there was also support for Ukraine and the strengthening of the defense-industrial complex of the European Union.

She said that the European Union should do more for defence, replenishing and modernising the weapons and troops of EU member states. The politician also emphasized that the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin should be punished for war crimes and appear before the tribunal in The Hague.
