The UN International Court of Justice (ICJ) obliged Israel to prevent acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip but did not order an immediate ceasefire.
The ICJ prohibited Israel from committing genocide in Gaza
On Friday, the International Court of Justice of the United Nations recognised that it has jurisdiction to consider the case in which the Republic of South Africa accused Israel of genocide against the Palestinian population.
The court ruled that Israel must "take all measures within its powers" to prevent acts falling within the scope of the Genocide Convention.
The court said that Israel must immediately ensure that its forces do not commit any acts under the Genocide Convention.
Israel, according to the court's ruling, must punish any public comments that could be considered incitement to genocide in Gaza.
Israel must also take immediate steps to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the court ruled.
Friday's decision is interim. A full review of a case filed by South Africa can take years. Israel rejects the accusations of genocide and has asked the court to drop them.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that he considers Israel's accusations of genocide to be baseless.
It will be recalled that the UN IC is also considering Ukraine's complaint against Russia under the Convention on the Prevention of Genocide. It is based on Moscow's accusation that it baselessly accused Kyiv of "genocide in Donbas" to justify a full-scale invasion.
