Viktor Orban threatens to disrupt the summit of European Union leaders. There, they will discuss aid to Kyiv and the issue of the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

Orban calls on the EU to refuse aid to Ukraine

According to the publication, at a meeting of diplomats last week, Hungary said it wanted to hold a "strategic discussion" of the bloc's financial support to Ukraine and how Russian sanctions have affected EU countries before even discussing providing additional financial aid or commitments in the sector. security

Hungary is also blocking negotiations on Ukraine's accession and the mid-term review of the EU budget.

Orbán's confrontational tone suggests he is no longer bothered by threats to cut funding from Brussels.

It is noted that the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, will visit Budapest on November 27 to meet with Orban, but EU government officials are preparing for the worst.

The position of Hungary regarding Ukraine

It should be noted that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban takes an openly pro-Russian position. He often makes statements discrediting Ukraine.

Since the start of the full-scale war, Hungary has not provided military aid to Ukraine, and it also blocks European Union sanctions against Russia. In addition, Budapest continues to trade with the Russian Federation and representatives of the Hungarian government visit Moscow.

EU officials said last month that the bloc was considering giving aid to Hungary to secure Budapest's support for Ukraine.

More recently, however, Bloomberg sources preparing for the Dec. 14-15 summit of EU leaders to discuss Ukraine have expressed growing scepticism that Orbán can be swayed.
