An employee of the main directorate for fighting organised crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs was detained in Bulgaria. He is suspected of passing classified information to a former Russian diplomat.

A Bulgaria's interior ministry employee spied for Russia

The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria reported that the detained worker had been under surveillance for several months.

Unfortunately, we are talking about an employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, who is being monitored. I confirm — it is about espionage. I will refrain from further comments. It is likely that after the completion of all procedural actions, there will be a special briefing in Sofia, said Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Zhivko Kotsev.

Currently, searches are being conducted in the Main Directorate for Fighting Organised Crime. There may be new suspects in the case.

It is assumed that the detainee provided official information to a Russian citizen. We are talking about a former diplomat in the Russian embassy in Sofia whom Bulgaria declared persona non grata.

According to the mass media, the message about espionage came from special services from abroad.

Bulgaria expelled a dozen Russian diplomats

In March 2022, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria declared ten Russian diplomats persona non grata.

Today, Bulgaria declared 10 Russian diplomats accredited in our country persona non grata, giving them a 72-hour deadline to leave the country.

According to the competent authorities, Embassy employees carried out activities on the territory of Bulgaria that were incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
