The majority of deputies of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe voted for Theodoros Roussopoulos from Greece, and he became the head of PACE. Roussopoulos is the 35th PACE president since 1949 and the first Greek citizen to hold the post.
The representative of Greece became the president of PACE
The representative of Greece, Theodoros Roussopoulos, became the new head of PACE. He is also a member of the European People's Party.
PACE reported this on the social network X.
As noted, Roussopoulos is the 35th PACE president since 1949 and the first Greek citizen to hold this position.
His term of office is one year and may be extended for another 365 days.
PACE presidential elections
Before that, this position was held by Tiny Cox. He served as PACE president for two years in a row. During last year's elections, the results of which became known in January 2023, a Ukrainian People's Deputy from the "Servant of the People" party, Oleksandr Merezhko, also applied for this position.
It should be noted that PACE became the first international organisation to recognise the regime in the Russian Federation as a terrorist.
The corresponding resolution entitled "Further escalation of aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine" was supported by 99 delegates. One abstained.
According to the document, the Russian regime is recognised as a terrorist.
It is worth noting that this is a powerful signal that is approaching the moment of recognition of the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism.
