Ukraine's accession to the EU: when will the negotiations begin

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the negotiating framework will be presented in mid-March.

The President of the European Commission said this in Kyiv at a joint press conference with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, and the Prime Ministers of Belgium, Alexander de Croo, Italy, Georgia Maloney, and Canada, Justin Trudeau.

I am inspired by the fact that I know that you are working to keep up with the recommendations of the European Commission. For our part, we, the European Commission, will present the negotiating framework in mid-March.

The president of the EC noted that the process of analyzing the compliance of Ukrainian legislation with the law of the European Union (screening) has begun with a very busy schedule of meetings.

Ukraine is on the way to the European Union

On December 14, 2023, the leaders of the EU member states decided to start negotiations with Ukraine on joining the Union. For this, they recommended the European Commission to approve the organizational aspects for negotiations.

In mid-January, it became known that the European Commission is working on a draft organizational framework for the opening negotiations with Ukraine. In particular, an assessment of the adoption of draft laws by the Verkhovna Rada for the implementation of the necessary steps was carried out.

It is about Ukraine's implementation of the recommendations of the European Commission, announced after Ukraine was granted the status of a candidate country for accession.

Recently, the chief spokesman of the European Commission, Eric Mamer, said that the organizational framework for the start of negotiations on Ukraine's EU membership may be ready in a few weeks, but the exact date has not been set.
