What is known about the attack on the U.S. embassy in Iraq

According to information from American and Iraqi officials, there were no casualties, but the shelling caused minor material damage.

According to representatives of the Iraqi security service, a total of 14 Katyusha [Soviet-designed MRLS — Ed.] rockets were fired. Some fell near the embassy gates, and others into the river. According to the embassy spokesman, a total of two MRLS rockets were fired.

Assessments are ongoing, but there are no reports of casualties on the embassy grounds, an embassy official said, adding that no specific group has claimed responsibility, but there are indications that the attacks were carried out by insurgents linked to Iran.

In particular, the embassy spokesman called on the Iraqi government to do everything possible to protect diplomatic personnel and coalition partners. He emphasized that the U.S. has the right to self-defense and protection anywhere in the world.

There are about 2,500 US troops in Iraq and about 900 more in eastern Syria, carrying out missions against the Islamic State group. In both countries, Iran has militias loyal to Tehran, the publication adds.

Attack on U.S. military bases

Iraq and Syria regularly attack U.S. military bases in the Middle East. The active phase began after the attack of Hamas militants on Israel.

For example, in early December, militants attacked an American military base with 15 missiles. There were no casualties.

However, in October, due to drone attacks on American bases in Iraq and Syria, 20 people were injured.

Also, on November 23, American troops were attacked with missiles and drones. According to an unnamed military representative, there were no casualties among the personnel and no damage to the infrastructure.

The media emphasized that the attacks took place the day after the U.S. strike against the Kataib Hezbollah militia. Its representatives stated that eight soldiers were killed as a result of the attack by American troops. Iraq condemned the actions as an escalation and a violation of sovereignty.

U.S. officials responded that the U.S. had struck Iranian groups after their attacks on U.S. and international forces escalated. According to the unnamed official, since October 17, there have been 36 attacks in Iraq and 37 in Syria.
