As British journalists managed to find out, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte can be appointed the Secretary General of NATO until the summer of 2024.

Mark Rutte can become the new Secretary General of NATO: the first details

Anonymous sources told Bloomberg that the members of the Alliance, which supports the candidacy of Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte for the post of NATO head, are working to decide on his appointment by the summer of 2024.

According to journalists, these deadlines can be extended, but the bloc expects a decision to be made before the summit of NATO leaders in Washington in July.

It is essential to understand that the decision must be unanimous among the 31 North Atlantic Treaty Organization member countries.

Rutte is already the front-runner to replace General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg, whose term ends in October. Despite this, it is worth understanding that some Eastern European countries still have to support the Dutch politician.

Rutte will face many challenges if elected NATO Secretary General

Journalists draw attention to the fact that the role of the NATO Secretary General will be vital because the Russian-Ukrainian war can last for years.

The chief of NATO will need to find a balance between avoiding any direct consequences or a wider escalation between the Alliance and Russia, as well as encouraging allies to continue military and financial support for Ukraine, as the public begins to tire of these costs, the editorial office of the publication writes.

What is essential to understand is that Mark Rutte will end his 13-year tenure as prime minister of the Netherlands after half a year of his country's government collapsing amid disputes over migration.

He will step down when far-right politician Geert Wilders forms a new coalition government.
