Ex-PM Boris Johnson can return to parliament only if one of the current parliamentarians gives up his place. Next in line is collecting 53 signatures for a letter of no confidence in Sunak.
Johnson can lead the British government again
A split is brewing in Britain's Conservative Party. Some conservatives advocate the resignation of the current Prime Minister of Great Britain, Rishi Sunak, and the return of his predecessor, Boris Johnson, to this position.
This, they believe, could save the Conservative Party from defeat at the next general election in 2025: polls now show that Labor enjoys twice the support of the Conservatives.
The Daily Mail reports about it.
According to the publication, the possibility of returning to the post of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the former head of government, is being discussed within the Conservative Party. Some conservatives are convinced this is the only way to save the party from a crushing defeat in the 2025 elections. After all, the latest sociological studies show that 41-45% of voters are ready to vote for Labor, while 22-29% of Britons will vote for the Conservatives.
Johnson, some conservatives believe, unlike Sunak, could reduce this gap.
The problem of the conservatives is that some of their voters may give their votes to the populist Reform Party, among the founders of which is Nigel Farage, a well-known supporter of Britain leaving the EU.
The growing popularity of this politician is already turning into actual funding. In particular, funds are transferred to him by party donors who usually support the Conservative Party. For example, one of the companies that moved about 640,000 pounds to the Conservative Party over 20 years immediately financed Farage's party with 100,000 pounds.
At the same time, Daily Mail sources note that Johnson has not yet been reinstated only because of the lack of a mandate. Replacing Sunak with another politician from the House of Commons will make the situation "worse rather than better."
The charismatic ex-prime minister can return to the parliament only if one of the current parliamentarians gives way to him. Next in line is collecting 53 signatures for a letter of no confidence in Sunak. At the same time, the option of appointing Priti Patel, an associate of the former prime minister, as interim prime minister is also being considered.
When asked by reporters, Johnson's representative declined to talk about his political ambitions.
Why the conflict broke out in Britain
The scandal erupted after Boris Johnson, in a column for The Spectator newspaper, began to demand that the British government stop delaying and send even more weapons to Ukraine.
According to him, official London must speed up providing military support to Kyiv. Otherwise, there is a potential risk of a catastrophic victory for the Russian dictator.
Boris Johnson also reiterated that he does not believe in the possibility of reaching a compromise with the Kremlin regarding the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
