Death toll from massive earthquake in Japan rises to almost 100

The death toll from the earthquake in Japan has risen to 92, with 460 people injured and 242 missing.

Large-scale earthquake occurred in Japan

As of Friday morning, the death toll stood at 92. Ishikawa authorities reported that 55 of the dead were in the city of Wajima and 23 in Suzu. Another 13 deaths were recorded in five neighbouring towns. More than 460 people were injured, at least 26 of them are in serious condition.

According to official figures, 242 people are still missing. The list of names is growing every day. Among the missing are many elderly people from the cities of Wajima and Suzu, which were hit hardest by the earthquake.

The newspaper emphasises that the situation is complicated by the fact that people have come to celebrate the New Year with their loved ones.

What is known about series of devastating earthquakes in Japan

According to the newspaper, citing the Japan Meteorological Agency, more than 100 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.9 to 7.6 were recorded within 12 hours.

It is noted that seismic activity was mainly recorded in the area of Noto in Ishikawa, where the most powerful earthquake occurred on the morning of 1 January.

Separate earthquakes, not necessarily related to each other, were also recorded in different parts of Japan.

According to available information, at least 4 people died as a result of the earthquakes.

One of the deceased was an elderly man who was hit by the debris of the building.

U.S. President Joe Biden has already declared his readiness to assist Japan in dealing with the aftermath of the disaster.
