The woman added that his family and friends "did everything they could and even more."

We so wanted him to be with us when they announced our Victory! I so wanted to see his happy face! His beautiful face! Because he was so handsome even at 86. His blue eyes were no longer so pure blue, but still bottomless. He loved Ukraine and Ukrainians so much. He tore his soul and heart for her, the dissident's wife emphasized.

It is worth noting that recently, Khmara has been seriously ill and was being treated both in Ukraine and abroad.

At the same time, the man himself was in a fighting mood. Back on February 15, he wrote on his Facebook that he is in the hospital, receiving intensive treatment and thinks he has a long time to live.

What is known about the achievements of Stepan Khmara

Stepan Khmara was a Ukrainian politician, human rights defender, doctor and dissident during the perestroika period, a political prisoner of Soviet concentration camps, and Ukraine's MP of the I, II and IV convocations.

In 2006, Stepan Khmara was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine with the award of the Order of the State "For distinguished personal merits in the struggle for the revival of the independence of Ukrainian statehood, devotion to the ideals of freedom and democracy."

He actively participated in the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity. He supported the morale of Ukrainians after the start of the war and the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.

A year after the Revolution of Dignity, in October 2015, Stepan Khmara announced a hunger strike in support of the political prisoners of the Lukyanivka pre-trial prison.

Despite his poor health, in the last months of his life, Stepan Khmara continued to actively engage in social activities. In particular, in the spring and summer of 2023, he participated in the trials of the Berkut people who shot at the peaceful Maidan.
