In Russia, after the death of opposition politician Oleksiy Navalny, commemorative actions were held. The police started detaining people.
Navalny's memorials are taking place in Russia
According to the Russian service of Radio Liberty, after the news of Navalny's death was published in many Russian cities, local residents began to bring flowers to monuments to political prisoners.
Spontaneous memorials arose in Ulyanovsk, Novosibirsk and Kirov, reports Astra.
The "Govoryt NeMoskva" channel reports on Tomsk, Kazan, Izhevsk, Pskov, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Tver, Kirov and Belgorod. Later, Vologda, Tolyatti, Saratov, Noginsk and many other Russian cities joined.
Throughout Russia, dozens of participants in Navalny's memorials have been detained.
For example, the police dispersed the rally in St. Petersburg. Among those detained were journalists, in total about 30 people were detained.
In Moscow, people bring flowers to the Solovetsky stone. The police are on duty near the memorial. It is reported that a picketer was detained near the "Wall of Sorrow". A teenager was later arrested with a poster reading "Murderer". In total, 8 people were detained in Moscow.
In Ulyanovsk, people in civilian clothes immediately remove the flowers and take pictures of those who brought them. They also write about the surroundings of the monuments from Omsk and Kazan.
In Nizhny Novgorod, 11 people were detained while laying flowers near the self-immolation site of journalist Iryna Slavina.
Navalny's death: what is known
On February 16, the management of the Russian prison reported that Navalny "felt ill" after the walk and "almost immediately" lost consciousness.
Resuscitation measures were carried out, but the emergency doctors declared death. He was 47 years old.
The cause of death is currently unknown. The pro-Kremlin TV channel RT reported that Navalny suffered a blood clot — this claim has not been officially confirmed.
A day before his death, Navalny appeared in the courtroom via live video link from prison, looking healthy. In the video, you can even hear Navalny joking with the judge.
