According to the Estonian Defense Forces Commander, Martin Herem, NATO could not objectively assess Russia's ammunition production capabilities.
Russia produces more ammunition than previously thought
Martin Herem has confirmed that new intelligence about Russia's ability to make ammunition and recruit troops was the main reason the Alliance had to reassess its past forecasts and conclude that a long-term conflict with the Russian Federation is a realistic scenario.
He also admitted that the hopes of the bloc's members that the Russian army would soon reach the limit of its resources turned out to be in vain.
According to Herem, the aggressor country has the ability and resources to produce several million artillery shells annually. In addition, the Russian authorities can recruit hundreds of thousands of new soldiers.
Journalists draw attention to the fact that Martin Herem, like many other NATO military commanders, is inclined to think that a war between the Russian Federation and the Alliance may soon begin.
NATO is ready to help Ukraine with ammunition
According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, on January 23, the Alliance officially signed contracts to purchase about 220,000 155 mm of artillery ammunition worth $1.2 billion.
By the way, the European Union is still promising to transfer the promised million of ammunition to Ukraine by March 2024, but this process is stalling.
