EU checks countries' contributions to aid Ukraine after Germany's demand

Olaf Scholz

Brussels decided to satisfy Germany's demand and conduct an audit of the financial contributions of other EU countries for military aid to Ukraine.

What is known about the inspection by Brussels of the contributions of other EU countries to help Ukraine

It is noted that the inspection is carried out by representatives of the diplomatic corps of the EU and employees of the External Action Service.

In particular, the supply of weapons to Ukraine by EU member states is being checked after the start of a large-scale invasion by the criminal army of Russia.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the European diplomats told journalists that the conclusions are planned to be submitted to the summit of EU leaders, which is to be held on February 1.

At the same time, the diplomat added that several countries have already begun to resist inspections and refuse to provide comprehensive information about the aid provided to Ukraine.

The decision to conduct the inspection was made after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz demanded last week that the countries' military supplies be counted and compared to Kyiv's.

Arms supplies to Ukraine, currently planned by most EU member states, are too small. We need an overview of what specific contribution our European partners will make to support Ukraine this year,Scholz said Scholz.

His comments echoed private remarks by officials from other EU countries about the scale of military supplies promised by other member states.

What is known about the reaction of other EU countries to Germany's initiatives to increase aid to Ukraine

EU Commissioner for Internal Trade and Services Thierry Breton reprimanded Germany for insufficient participation in the joint efforts of European countries to help Ukraine.

Instead, according to him, Berlin prefers to provide aid to Ukraine unilaterally.

He also resented that Germany supported the European Peace Fund to a lesser extent.

Today we see that Germany is trying to act alone, it has not fooled anyone, and in particular, it is trying to end support for the European Peace Fund, Politico journalists quoted Breton as saying.

The fund is an extra-budgetary mechanism for financing the EU's offshore military missions and assisting allies by reimbursing the cost of military supplies.

Germany is the most significant contributor to the EPF, as countries pay contributions in proportion to their gross national income.
