EU leaders approve €50 billion funding for Ukraine

EU

All 27 leaders of the member states of the European Union agreed to a four-year aid package for Ukraine worth €50 billion.

The EU agrees an additional support package for Ukraine

We have a deal. All 27 leaders agreed on an additional €50 billion support package for Ukraine within the EU budget. This locks in steadfast, long-term, predictable funding for Ukraine, — Charles Michel wrote.

The head of the European Council added that the EU takes leadership and responsibility in supporting Ukraine, because they "know what is at stake."

Aid to Ukraine

EU leaders in December 2023 agreed to start accession negotiations with Ukraine, but Hungary vetoed the provision of €50 billion in aid to Kyiv.

All 27 national bloc leaders will meet again in Brussels on February 1 to agree on providing Kyiv financial assistance.

Previously, the Financial Times reported that the EU has prepared a plan for economic sanctions against Budapest if it does not agree to provide support to Kyiv. The goal is to damage Hungary's economy and force it to lift the veto.
