Europe must work to develop and establish production of the next generation of operational defence capabilities, which will enable victory in any battle.
The EU should form a Defence Union in the next five years
The European institutions must form a true defence union during the next five years, as strengthening the EU's security is urgent.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated this in Bucharest during a speech at the European People's Party (EPP) conference on identifying key candidates for the upcoming European elections.
Security for Europe means that we must do more for our defence. Our next goal is apparent: we must boost our industrial capabilities over the next five years. A straightforward principle should be at this heart — Europe should spend more... This will help us respond to the urgent need to restore, replenish and modernize the armed forces of member countries and continue to support Ukraine.

How Europe is preparing to protect its territories
She expressed her belief that Europe should try to develop and establish the production of the next generation of operational defence capabilities that will allow victory in any battle.
The EPP is a party that stands for a Europe that can defend itself. And we will be the party that will achieve results in (forming) the defense union. This goal needs undivided attention, which is why we need to have a European Commissioner for Defense for the next mandate (European Commission — ed.). This is our goal, the goal of the EPP, said the President of the European Commission.
