On Mar. 5, the European Commission proposed to the EU authorities that the defence industry be transferred to a war economy regime amid the Russo-Ukrainian war.

The EU may turn to a war economy

As journalists found out, the European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, plans to present proposals to encourage EU countries to buy more weapons from European companies and assist such companies in increasing production capacity.

According to Breton, the high probability that Donald Trump will return to the White House should push Europe to take more decisive actions in matters of its defense.

We need to change the paradigm and switch to a war economy regime. It also means that the European defence industry must take more significant risks with our support.

According to him, in the current geopolitical context, official Brussels must take greater responsibility for its security, regardless of what will happen next in the US and who will become the next president.

The EU was not ready for the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine

Foreign analysts have come to the conclusion that the industry of the European Union cannot cope with the serious problems that arose after the invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.

That is why official Brussels will discuss the creation of a European version of the American scheme of foreign military sales, according to which the United States helps the governments of other countries to buy weapons from American companies.

Another proposal would allow the EU to force European arms companies to prioritize European orders during a crisis.

It is worth noting that implementing this plan requires the approval of 27 national governments of the European Union.
