EU set a deadline for provision of million shells for Ukraine

Shells

The EU has the resources to produce one million rounds of ammunition for Ukraine by spring 2024, although the process is still slow.

Ukraine may receive a million shells from the EU in 2 months

This statement was made by Johanna Bernsel, the European Commission's spokesperson for the defence industry.

According to her, today the EU industry already has a production capacity that far exceeds one million artillery shells.

We will achieve this goal by spring, Johanna Bernsel promised.

According to the EU external action service spokesperson Peter Stano, as of the end of December 2023, Ukrainian soldiers received more than 300,000 rounds of ammunition and 3,300 missiles from all existing stocks.

We also have at least 180,000 shells for which orders have already been placed as of the end of December, and this number is increasing in accordance with the contracts," the European diplomat added.

The EU has delivered less than half of the promised 1 million shells to Ukraine

As Reuters has learned, EU member states have managed to deliver only 480,000 of the promised one million artillery shells to Ukraine by spring 2024.

What is important to understand is that back in March 2023, the leadership of the bloc created a plan to provide Ukraine with one million artillery shells.

The plan consisted of three parts: supplies from EU army stockpiles, investment in domestic production, and ordering shells from arms companies under a joint procurement scheme coordinated by the European Defence Agency.

However, EU leaders later warned that they might not be able to deliver on their promise.
