The EU has the resources to produce one million rounds of ammunition for Ukraine by spring 2024, although the process is still slow.
Ukraine may receive a million shells from the EU in 2 months
This statement was made by Johanna Bernsel, the European Commission's spokesperson for the defence industry.
According to her, today the EU industry already has a production capacity that far exceeds one million artillery shells.
According to the EU external action service spokesperson Peter Stano, as of the end of December 2023, Ukrainian soldiers received more than 300,000 rounds of ammunition and 3,300 missiles from all existing stocks.
The EU has delivered less than half of the promised 1 million shells to Ukraine
As Reuters has learned, EU member states have managed to deliver only 480,000 of the promised one million artillery shells to Ukraine by spring 2024.
The plan consisted of three parts: supplies from EU army stockpiles, investment in domestic production, and ordering shells from arms companies under a joint procurement scheme coordinated by the European Defence Agency.
However, EU leaders later warned that they might not be able to deliver on their promise.
