In 2024, Germany will spend more than 7.6 billion dollars on aid to Ukraine. European allies should also invest more money in providing arms and ammunition to Kyiv.
Scholz calls on the EU to support Ukraine
If the message to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is that the West will stand together in support of Ukraine and not back down, "then peace will be possible sooner than we think today."
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz told Tagesspiegel.
In particular, he added that Germany will spend more than 7 billion euros on aid to Ukraine this year. According to him, it is unacceptable that Berlin currently provides Kyiv with more than half of the total military aid of all European countries.
German aid to Ukraine
Since the beginning of the full-scale war with the Russian Federation, Germany has provided Ukraine with several types of artillery, Leopard tanks of older and newer modifications, IRIS-T and Patriot air defence systems, ammunition, cars, drones and other types of weapons.
According to the inspector general of the German armed forces, Karsten Breuer, it is expected that in 2024, Berlin will also provide Ukraine with about 200,000 shells.
Meanwhile, Kyiv invited long-range Taurus missiles from Germany, which are capable of destroying targets at a distance of up to 500 km. At the same time, the chancellor opposed such an idea.
Despite everything, the company Taurus Systems GmbH, for its part, is ready to quickly replenish the stocks of long-range missiles in Germany in case of supplying them to Ukraine.
