Six agricultural organisations of the EU made a joint statement regarding the need to limit the import of agricultural products from Ukraine in order to protect European producers.
What is known about the demands of European farmers regarding restrictions on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine
The joint statement states that if the duty-free import mechanism of Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU, introduced in May 2022, is preserved, the existence of European farmers will be at risk.
European agricultural producers demand the use of sea and river corridors for transporting Ukrainian grain to other countries.
They also demand to strengthen phytosanitary control at the borders.
In addition, it is proposed to introduce mechanisms that would help determine the destination of Ukrainian products and ensure that they get there.
At the same time, they propose to introduce thresholds for the import of these products, based on the level of the average values of 2021-2022, so that everything that exceeds these norms can only pass through the EU before being exported to third countries.
What is known about Poland's position
The local authorities of Poland have issued a document prohibiting Polish carriers from blocking the "Medyka-Shehyni" checkpoint on the border with Ukraine.
Polish carriers wanted to block the movement of trucks from Ukraine in the period from January 15 to March 15. They did not receive a permit, so the checkpoint must remain open for trucks.
At the same time, supporters of far-right politician Rafal Mekler, who is leading the protests of Polish carriers at the border, call for the ban to be ignored.
However, the politician himself avoids such statements and appeals.
Polish transporters want to achieve the return of permits for Ukrainian trucks and other preferences. Farmers, who also blocked the border, have already "bargained" for the cancellation of tax increases, benefits for corn and other assistance.
