French leader Emmanuel Macron optimistically believes that he will be able to convince Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to change his tough stance on supporting Ukraine before the summit of EU leaders on December 14-15.

Macron decided to fight for the future of Ukraine in the EU

The editors of Politico spoke to their insiders in European political circles to find out what they expect from Viktor Orbán.

As it turned out, many EU leaders have still not been able to understand what Putin's henchman is trying to achieve: is he planning to disrupt support for Ukraine, or is he simply trying to blackmail the European Union.

However, according to French President Emmanuel Macron, official Brussels will still find a way out of this situation, and he is ready to contribute directly.

He cares that over dinner in Paris, he and Orban will be able to reach a compromise on the issue of support for Ukraine.

The Hungarians are taking a tough position, they are increasing their leverage in the negotiations. If they do it, it is to give Viktor Orbán the opportunity to negotiate... Now we are entering a more active phase of negotiations, with negotiations at the highest level (between Orbán and Macron — Ed.), one of the French diplomats told reporters.

Why the EU does not approve Macron's idea of negotiations with Orban

As it turned out, the initiative of the French president seemed utopian to many leaders of the European Union since Macron tried many times to negotiate with various dictators and autocrats, but these attempts were unsuccessful.

He keeps trying and keeps failing. He tried it with Trump, then with Putin, and he is trying it with Orban... They (EU members — ed.) continue to feed the monster and wonder why it comes back bigger and asks for more, one of the insiders complained to journalists.

According to another French official, "Macron has a soft spot for the bad guys. It challenges him intellectually."
