Hungary's MFA chief explains why Zelenskyy and Orbán's meeting is yet impossible

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Péter Szijjártó, said that there are no conditions for a meeting between Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban yet.

During the press conference, Péter Szijjártó said that the Ukrainian government has not submitted any proposals that would include progress on restoring the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia by 2015.

"Unfortunately, we have to state that the response document sent to us by our Ukrainian colleagues does not contain any changes in this area," he said.

Sijarto added that an official response will be sent to Kyiv on Wednesday, March 6.

Until Ukraine adopts the necessary legislation to restore the rights of the Hungarian national community, the conditions for a high-level meeting cannot be created.

A meeting between Szijjártó and Kuleba

On January 29, Siyarto came to Uzhhorod, where he met with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, and the head of the President's Office, Andriy Yermak.

They conducted negotiations on the normalisation of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations. Hungary expects the return of its rights to the Hungarian national minority in Zakarpattia until 2015.

Budapest provided Kyiv with an 11-point document on what decisions the Ukrainian side should make.
