The Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supported the draft resolution on nuclear safety, security, and guarantees in Ukraine with a majority of votes. It demands the return of the Zaporizhzhia NPP (ZNPP) to the control of Kyiv.
What is known about the new resolution regarding the return of ZNPP to the control of Ukraine
The document, in particular, calls on Russia to urgently remove all unauthorized personnel, including military personnel, from the ZNPP and immediately return the plant to the full control of the competent authorities of Ukraine in accordance with the existing license issued by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine. This is necessary to ensure its safe and reliable operation.
The document also expresses serious concern about the unstable state of nuclear safety and security at the ZNPP, especially the lack of properly qualified personnel at the site, gaps in planning and prevention work, the lack of reliable supply chains, the vulnerable state of water supply and external power supply, and the installation of anti-personnel mines in the buffer zone between the internal and external perimeter of the installation.
