Against the background of Russia's war against Ukraine, the head of the German Union of Cities and Communities called for an increase in the number of bomb shelters in the country. Of the two thousand civilian shelters of the "Cold War" era, only 600 remain, which can accommodate about 500,000 people.
Bomb shelters are being deconserved in Germany
The German Union of Cities and Communities urged the federal government to think not only about rearming the Bundeswehr, but also about protecting the civilian population.
This is reported by DW.
The head of the association, Andre Berghegger, said that safety can no longer be taken for granted.
According to the head of the association, the protection of civilians of the Federal Republic of Germany is a joint task of the federal, state and local authorities. According to him, this will require at least 1 billion euros in each of the next ten years, and we are not talking about money from the special fund for the re-equipment of the armed forces.
In particular, the head of the German Union of Cities and Communities called for an increase in the number of bomb shelters in the country. Of the two thousand civilian storage facilities of the "Cold War" era, only 600 remain, which can hold about 500,000 people.
There is an urgent need to return to operation the decommissioned storage facilities.
In addition, according to his conviction, it is necessary to build new, modern shelters and install additional air alarm sirens.
Mandatory conscription into the army will be brought back in Germany
In Germany, it was proposed to return mandatory conscription to the army. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius instructed to develop a model of military service by April 1, which should contribute to the stability of the country.
The minister plans to return to military service by the fall of 2025, when federal elections are scheduled. The initiative is designed to "make a scalable, threat-adapted contribution to national resilience."
It is noted that Pistorius intends to make a decision on compulsory military service during this legislative period.
