The head of one of the Ukrainian MOD departments, Toomas Nakhkur, was suspended. The reason for this was the suspicion he received on January 27.

What is known about the suspension of Nakhkur

Defense Minister Rustem Umierov suspended the head of the Department of Military-Technical Policy, Development of Weapons and Military Equipment of the Ministry of Defense, Toomas Nakhkur, from his duties.

It notes that the relevant decision was approved by the head of the Ministry of Defense on February 1 at the request of his deputy Ivan Gavrylyuk.

The reason for suspension is the announcement of suspicion in criminal proceedings. The suspicion was handed over to Toomas Nahkur on January 27, 2024, the ministry said.

What is known about the embezzlement of shell purchase funds

On January 27, employees of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) searched the officials of the Ministry of Defense and the managers of Lviv Arsenal.

The SSU, with the MOD's assistance, exposed a scheme of embezzlement of state funds while procuring ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Law enforcement officers documented the data and identified all persons involved in the device.

According to the case file, five defendants were charged with suspicion under Chapter 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code (appropriation, embezzlement of property or possession of it by abuse of official position, committed by an organized group). They face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.

In particular, the following were suspected:

  • Former and current chiefs of the Department of Military-Technical Policy, Development of Weapons and Military Equipment of the Ministry of Defense;

  • CEO and commercial director of "Lviv Arsenal" company;

  • a representative of a foreign commercial structure.

One of the suspects, namely the ex-head of the Ministry of Defense, Oleksandr Liev, was detained while trying to leave the country.
