Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) have noted that the criminal army of Russia achieved scant success in the area of Bakhmut, near Donetsk and Avdiivka at the cost of incredible losses.
What is known about the situation in eastern Ukraine
Analysts, citing Russian and Ukrainian sources, report that in Kharkiv and Luhansk regions, positional fighting is taking place in the area of Synkivka, northeast of Kupiansk, and southeast of the city in the vicinity of Ivanivka, Pishchane and Berestove.
In Luhansk region — in the area of Makiivka southwest of Svatove and west of Kreminna in the area of Terny, Torske and Yampolivka, as well as south of Kreminna in the area of Hryhorivka.
According to the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Syniehubov, the Russian criminal army is preparing for another offensive in the area of Synkivka.
ISW analysts note that until January of this year, the western grouping of the Russian criminal army was relatively less depleted and better prepared than other groups of the occupation army.
Despite the relatively good condition of the western grouping of Russian troops, it is unclear whether it will be able to achieve significant success in offensive operations.
This is because Russia's previous offensives, such as the attack on Avdiivka, were disorganised and costly.
In addition, Russian forces operating in the Kupiansk sector may face difficulties in trying to capture Kupiansk.
Analysts emphasise that the Russian army can currently conduct only limited hostilities in the Kharkiv region.
At the same time, ISW suggests that these actions are likely to distract the Ukrainian military from the occupiers' intentions to capture Kupiansk.
In the Donetsk region, analysts say, citing geolocation data as of 11 January, the Russian criminal army managed to advance slightly east of Vesele, northeast of Bakhmut.
As of 12 January, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the occupiers were attempting to improve the tactical situation near Vesele.
On 12 January, positional fighting continued in the vicinity of Bakhmut, but without any confirmed changes to the front line.
The fighting took place northwest of Bakhmut in the area of Bohdanivka, as well as west of the city in the area of Khromove and in the direction of Ivanove.
Fighting also took place southwest of Bakhmut in the area of Klishchiivka and Andriivka.
Analysts note that the Russian occupiers managed to slightly strengthen their positions northwest of Avdiivka.
Geolocation data as of 12 January indicates that the Russian army's criminals have slightly advanced east of the Avdiivka Coke Plant, northwest of the city.
Fighting also took place north-west of Avdiivka in the area of Novobakhmutivka, Ocheretyno and Stepove, near the Avdiivka Coke and Chemical Plant, southeast of Avdiivka in the industrial zone, and south-west of Avdiivka in the area of Nevelske and Pervomaiske.
Analysts also note a slight advance of the Russian occupiers southwest of Donetsk.
In addition, Russian war criminals made minor gains south of Novomykhailivka, southwest of Donetsk.
At the same time, positional fighting took place west of Donetsk in the area of Maryinka, Heorhiivka and Krasnohorivka and southwest of Donetsk in the area of Peremoha and Novomykhailivka.
According to Ukrainian military analyst Kostyantyn Mashovets, the Russian army is storming Novomykhailivka to block the O0532 Maryinka-Vuhledar road.
What is known about the situation in the south of Ukraine
Analysts reported limited fighting on 12 January on the border of Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, but without any confirmed changes in the front line.
At the same time, attention is drawn to the recent advance of the Russian occupiers in the west of Zaporizhzhia region.
Geolocation data as of 10 and 12 January indicate that the occupiers seized Ukrainian positions along the road west of Verbove and east of Robotyne.
Positional fighting continued in the area of Robotyne, Verbove and Nesteryanka.
Analysts report a slight advance of Russian war criminals in the area of Krynok in Kherson region.
A video with geolocation, published on 12 January, shows that the Russian occupiers have made little progress in the eastern part of Krynky.
