On February 2, the Kharkiv groundhog Tymko III predicted that spring in Ukraine would be early and would arrive in six weeks.

Groundhog Timko III made a forecast for spring

At the research bio-station of the Karazin University in the village of Gaidary, groundhog Timko III heralded the arrival of spring for the twentieth time.

Timko did not see his shadow, meaning spring would be early.

Timko says that we have had enough of an unstable spring. That spring can only be Ukrainian, so we are waiting for our warm Ukrainian spring in six weeks, Nadiya Tokarska, the daughter of the head of the biostation Viktor Tokarskyi, explained the fortune-telling.

According to the Kharkiv publication Dumka, the groundhog was also asked what would help Ukrainians win the war.

In front of the forteller, they placed a military helmet, a "Snorp" figure and a map of Ukraine. The groundhog ran towards "Snorp" and the map of Ukraine. This means that unity and patience will help Ukraine win the war against Russia.

Groundhog Day in Ukraine: what is known

Since 2004, scientists from Kharkiv, led by Professor Viktor Tokarsky, have celebrated Groundhog Day at the bio-station in Gaidary near Zmiiev.

During this time, three groundhogs announced the arrival of spring. Scientists did not track whether their predictions were accurate.

Groundhog Day is a popular holiday in the USA. Still, in Ukraine, it draws public attention to the problem of the disappearance of biological diversity, particularly the gradual reduction in the number of groundhogs.

The Red Book currently lists the steppe groundhog as an endangered species.

It's worth noting the village of Nesterivka, home to the groundhog Tymko III and about 30 other marmots, has been under occupation since February 24, 2022. AFU liberated the settlement in September 2022.
