Kuleba explains how Orban's presidency of the European Council can affect Ukraine

Dmytro Kuleba

According to Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the likely appointment of Viktor Orban as interim president of the European Council and Hungary's presidency of the EU Council will not have a negative impact on Ukraine.

Kuleba urges Ukrainians not to panic if Orban heads EU Council

What is important to understand is that official Brussels, according to the current head of the European Union, still has half a year to choose his successor after Charles Michel takes part in the elections to the European Parliament.

You know, as my grandmother used to say, "we survived the famine, we will survive prosperity". Even if Orban performs these duties for six months, we will survive these six months, the Foreign Minister reassured Ukrainians.

Kuleba noted that our government is "working very hard" in the European direction and has a clear plan and a clear understanding of "where we are going, who works with whom, what is the schedule for making decisions, and advocating for these decisions".

Unlike Russia, we are all democratic countries, and therefore we must be prepared for any changes that may occur in any country at any time, said Dmytro Kuleba.

According to the minister, despite all the difficulties and threats, Ukraine must move forward and not give up.

Why exactly Orban can become head of European Council

As mentioned earlier, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, has recently officially announced that he will run for the European Parliament in June and thus leave his post early.

If this happens, and EU leaders cannot quickly agree on Michel's successor, the presidency of the European Council will temporarily pass to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the leader of the country that will hold the EU Council presidency from July 2024 to December.
