The Dutch company VEON, which owns the Ukrainian mobile operator "Kyivstar", announced losses from a cyber attack and network failure on December 12. They amount to almost $100 million.
What are the losses of the Russian cyber attack on Kyivstar
The international holding VEON said the massive cyberattack on December 12, 2023, would cost approximately 3.6 billion hryvnias (about 95 million dollars).
As noted, the losses were caused by measures taken by the company to compensate customers for the inconvenience caused by disruptions in the Kyivstar network.
"Kyivstar" plans to continue work on restoration and compensation in the coming months. The costs or loss of revenue from any other similar remedial actions are uncertain and cannot be reasonably estimated at this time.
What is known about the attack on "Kyivstar"
A large-scale disruption in the work of the telecommunications company "Kyivstar" took place on December 12, 2023. There was no mobile connection or home internet during the failure for several days.
The head of Ukraine's Security Service (SSU) cyber security department, Ilya Vityuk, said that "almost everything" was destroyed due to the attack, including thousands of virtual servers and PCs. He called it the first example of a devastating cyberattack that "destroyed the core of a communications operator."
The SSU estimates that Russian hackers could steal personal information, locate phones, intercept SMS messages and possibly steal Telegram accounts with the level of access they gained.
After the failure, "Kyivstar" cancelled the monthly fee for its subscribers.
