According to the leader of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, the European Union should purchase shells for Ukraine outside its borders because, as you know, the bloc itself does not have time to hand over artillery ammunition to the Armed Forces of Ukraine according to the schedule by March.

The President of Latvia calls to prevent ammunition starvation in the Armed Forces

We have been advocating for a long time that if there is not enough ammunition or equipment in the EU, we will buy them elsewhere and hand them over to Ukraine, Edgars Rinkevichs made his proposal on this matter.

He again drew the attention of official Brussels and the international community to the fact that Ukraine does not stop its counteroffensive, which means it needs large-scale and urgent military assistance.

It is important to understand that the question of whether all the ammunition that the European Union intends to transfer to Kyiv should be produced by companies in the EU and Norway has provoked a lot of discussion.

Official Paris, which has the largest defense sector in the EU, insisted on strict restrictions on bringing non-EU munitions into the initiative.

Sweden and the Baltic countries supported the diametrically opposite position.

Why the EU has no right to make a mistake in the current situation

According to the president of Latvia, the key challenge for the European Union is not so much defense spending as where Brussels can find equipment to replenish its reserves, to rearm its armed forces

He called on the members of the bloc to finally come to terms with the fact that the Russian-Ukrainian war will last longer than previously predicted.

In addition, Edgars Rinkevichs warned that problems in the European Union may have a negative impact on the States, where aid to Ukraine also faces political difficulties.

When I talk to the Americans, I am a little worried that they live under the impression that Europe does not give enough, although in fact we spend on Ukraine, if you combine the military and all kinds of programs, more than the United States, the president of Latvia complained.
