Russia's missile attack on the capital on 29 December was the largest in terms of civilian casualties. 16 people have been killed, according to the latest data.

Number of civilians killed in largest Russian missile attack on Ukraine increased

Over the past few hours, rescuers have found the bodies of three more people under the rubble. As of 12:40 a.m., 16 Ukrainians have been reported dead.

The search and rescue operation is ongoing and, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, will continue tomorrow.

1 January will be declared the day of mourning in Kyiv.

Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Odesa also announced a day of mourning for the victims.

What is known about the missile attack on Ukraine on December 29

On the morning of 29 December, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Ukraine. They fired 122 missiles and 36 drones at Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.

Residential buildings, multi-storey buildings, a maternity hospital, schools, kindergartens, and a shopping centre were destroyed. Air defence systems shot down 87 cruise missiles and 27 attack drones. Over 30 people were killed and over 160 injured.

Air defences destroyed more than 30 targets over Kyiv. The shelling caused a fire in high-rise buildings and a warehouse in the capital. The rubble in the warehouse in Shevchenkivskyi district continues to be cleared.
