Explosions is heard in Mariupol

On the morning of 12 January, the adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andriushchenko, said that it was "loud" in all districts of the city.

Mariupol. It's loud. All districts of the city. We are finding out the details," Andriushchenko wrote on his channel.

What is the situation in Mariupol?

Russian troops captured Mariupol in February 2022, at the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the city has become an important transit point for Russian troops, transporting weapons, equipment and soldiers to the front line.

According to satellite imagery published online, the Russian occupiers want to connect Mariupol with Russian Rostov, Taganrog and other major cities in Donbas. They have already started building the road.

On 7 January, a railway bridge half-built by the Russian occupiers was destroyed by a precision strike near Mariupol. Fuel tanks and engineering vehicles also burned down.

The Russian occupiers tried to shoot down the missiles that attacked the bridge, but to no avail. In addition, the invaders "lit up" the location of new air defence batteries in the Mariupol district.

Andriushchenko notes that the bridge was part of the Russian plan to build a railway from Russia to Mariupol.
