According to Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mykhailo Vynnytskyi, the number of higher education institutions in Ukraine may soon decrease, as the number of school graduates has been significantly decreasing in recent years.

There may be fewer universities in Ukraine: the first details

The representative of the Ministry of Education and Culture draws attention to the fact that last year, there were about 360,000 school graduates in Ukraine, while in 2008, this number reached 640,000.

According to him, in 2008, about 350 educational institutions with an average of 6,700 students were inspected.

Mykhailo Vynnytskyi also noted the number of institutions decreased to 300 in 2021. According to official data, the number of students reaches 3.4 thousand each.

The Ministry of Education and Culture representative assures the problem of the outflow of Ukrainian students abroad is not as large as it seems to many.

Based only on demography, which does not take into account the indicators of migration related to the war, we see a constant decrease in the number of people who were born on the territory of Ukraine 17 years ago.

In addition, it is predicted that in 10 years, there will be approximately 300,000 graduates in Ukraine. What is essential to understand is that this amount involves the return of all territories occupied by Russia.

Ukraine's Education Ministry is preparing a higher education reform

As noted by Mykhailo Vynnytskyi, as of today, in addition to 100 private institutions of higher education and 40 communal ones, our country has almost 170 state universities.

The MES team has already developed a draft law on the reform of higher education, which provides for the reduction of the number of higher education institutions to about 100.

There must be a certain reduction or consolidation of higher education institutions. In addition, the draft law envisages not only reducing the number of universities, but also improving their quality.
