Milei's inauguration on December 10, 40 years since Argentina's return to democracy, ushers in an era of right-wing economic liberalism that starkly contrasts President Alberto Fernandez's Peronism and redistributive policies.
Javier Milei became the president of Argentina
On December 10, Javier Milei was sworn a presidential oath as the president of Argentina.
The Buenos Aires Herald reported this.
The newspaper notes that Milei's inauguration, 40 years after Argentina's return to democracy, ushers in an era of right-wing economic liberalism that stands in stark contrast to the Peronism and redistributive policies of outgoing President Alberto Fernandez and the centre-right progressiveness of Mauricio Macri, who preceded him.
Under chants of "Liberty! Liberty!" Milei took the presidential oath. Alberto Fernández put the presidential sash on him and handed him the presidential baton, patting him on the shoulder and saying briefly as Milei's supporters chanted "President! President!"
After Milei was sworn the oath, Victoria Villarruel was sworn the oath as vice president.
After Milei arrived at the Argentine Congress in a motorcade with increased security. Accompanied by the new Vice President Victoria Villarruel, he climbed the steps of Congress. Outgoing Vice President Cristina Fernandez de Kircher escorted him up the stairs, visibly suppressing a smile. Milei and Villarruel signed the Books of Honor of the Congress to the applause and cheers of their supporters.
Under his signature, Milei wrote "Long live freedom, damn it" — his main slogan throughout the campaign.
Zelenskyy congratulated Milei
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in the inauguration of Javier Milei in Buenos Aires and congratulated the new president.
