According to NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana, if Donald Trump becomes president of the United States, he will not be able to withdraw the country from the Alliance.

NATO sees no threat of Trump's withdrawal from NATO

Geoana explains his opinion by saying that the US needs the support of its allies and partners, and NATO has the right number of them.

We have already worked with Trump, so we are fully confident that for America, NATO is the place where they have the most allies in one organisation," the deputy head of the organisation said.

Geoana noted that each country has its own rules of the democratic game and in any case it will be necessary to respect the choice of the American people.

In this complex world, where the role of China is growing, where China, Russia, North Korea and Iran are forming very complex alliances, the United States is realising for the first time in 75 years how valuable NATO and American alliances are globally," said Deputy Stoltenberg.

In his opinion, in case of victory in the elections, Trump will not implement his pre-election statements and try to withdraw the USA from NATO, and the situation will actually develop in the spirit of constructive logic.

What is known about the legal cases against Trump

A New York court has ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay nearly $400,000 in legal fees to The New York Times and three journalists who disclosed Trump's tax returns in 2018.

According to AP journalists, in 2021, Trump filed a lawsuit against The New York Times and three of its journalists who published a story about the former president's family's tax evasion, as well as against his niece Mary Trump.

The former US president demanded $100 million in compensation from the NYT journalists and his niece for participating "in an insidious conspiracy to obtain confidential and highly classified records that they used for their own benefit".

It was alleged that Mary Trump was the source of the tax returns that were used to create a high-profile New York Times article that won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018.

It alleged that Donald Trump and his father avoided paying taxes on valuable gifts and inheritances by setting up a fictitious company and undervaluing their assets to the tax authorities.

In the lawsuit, the former US president also claimed that the journalists were aware of a settlement agreement with Mary Trump that prohibited her from disclosing documents obtained as part of a lawsuit over Donald Trump's father's estate, which formed the basis of the NYT article.

A New York court dismissed the charges against The New York Times and its journalists back in May 2023, and now has awarded more than $392,000 in compensation for legal fees to be paid by Trump.

The latter's lawsuit against his niece is still pending. She, in turn, has filed a counterclaim against Trump himself, claiming that he is trying to "prevent her and others from criticising him in the future".
