The border between Egypt and Gaza "must be closed," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday. This move would give Israel complete control over the Palestinian enclave's access to the world.
Netanyahu wants to cut off Gaza from Egypt
Netanyahu said Israel would not consider the war over until it closes the Philadelphi Corridor, a 14-km strip of land that serves as a buffer zone on the border between Egypt and Gaza.
Egypt has previously warned Israel against military operations in the corridor, reports the Egyptian publication Ahram Online.
The state news agency, citing an unnamed source, said in October that any Israeli incursion into the Philadelphi Corridor would be seen as a violation of the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty.
Israel's war with Hamas
Hamas militants invaded Israel on October 7. Terrorists began to kill and kidnap both military and civilian people. Soon, Jerusalem announced Operation Swords of Iron and shelled terrorist positions in the Gaza Strip.
On November 24, a ceasefire began between Jerusalem and the militants for the release of prisoners, and then Qatar acted as a mediator. Already on December 1, hostilities were resumed, as Israel claims, due to a violation of Hamas ceasefire terms.
On December 20, Israel offered the Palestinians to conclude a ceasefire for a week. But Hamas rejected the offer.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu named three conditions that must be met for the end of the war against the Palestinian militants Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
