The government of Norway proposes to the parliament to purchase additional components for the NASAMS anti-aircraft missile complex for Ukraine.

Norway will purchase additional NASAMS air defence systems for Ukraine

The Norwegian-American NASAMS complex is already on combat duty in Ukraine. In addition to the already delivered air defence systems, the Norwegian government proposes to buy ten more launchers and four fire control points for Ukraine. The total value of the contracts is already NOK 3.45 billion. There are six anti-aircraft missiles in one launcher.

The NASAMS air defence system is produced by the Norwegian company Kongsberg Defense and Aerospace in cooperation with the American RTX.

As previously reported by the mass media, producing one complex requires two years of work.

The problem lies in the fact that the anti-aircraft missile system is complex and has a number of contractors. The main contractors have their subcontractors, and the subcontractors have their suppliers, and so on down the pyramid to the specific mines where the required materials are mined.

Russian missile and drone attacks are massive and brutal, so air defense is absolutely critical for Ukraine. At the same time, I am concerned that we restore air defenses for our own defense as soon as possible, says Defence Minister Björn Arild Gram.

What is known about the previous aid package from Norway

Norway will provide additional air defence equipment and more than NOK 3 billion to the Ukrainian government to support critical public services.

Some NASAMS are shipped from the country's warehouses, while others will be ordered from manufacturers for delivery later.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Har Støre announced this after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Just this morning we learned that Ukraine was under attack by Russian missiles and you need all the support you can get to defend yourself. Today, Norway is announcing additional support to Ukraine, Støre said.

Norway's long-term support package for Ukraine includes:

  • NOK 135 million for government budget support. The money will be used for educational services, health care, and pension payments. Now, another 3 billion have been directed there. They will be allocated through the Trust Fund for Assistance, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reforms in Ukraine (URTF) of the World Bank;

  • NOK 335 million for air defence equipment;

  • NOK 1 billion as co-financing to strengthen the defence industry to produce more ammunition and missiles.

  • NOK 137 million — for food, water, warm clothes, blankets, and places to live for people who will lose their homes due to the war in the winter.

This funding is in addition to contributions already announced in 2023. Store noted that in 2024, aid to Ukraine will also be provided from the very first months so that there are no delays in the delivery of aid.

We have to do everything we can to help relieve people who are already under a lot of pressure and are going through a very harsh winter again, said Støre.

President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the Prime Minister of Norway, the Norwegian government and parliament, and the entire Norwegian society for their leadership.
