Roman Svitan, military expert, retired colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, notes that the most difficult part of the frontline for our defenders remains the East. It is there that AFU are still holding an active defence, despite the fact that they are gradually advancing in the south.

What is happening in Donbas and what to expect next

According to Roman Svitan, today we have one line of defence — the Donetsk direction.

For us, this is the most dangerous and difficult area, as the Donetsk front is close to Russia, the expert explains.

We also cannot ignore the fact that our fortifications in the East are quite powerful, as we know they have been built over the past 10 years.

Roman Svitan reminds us that they managed to successfully deter all the attacks of the Russian army, which in turn gives us hope that they will be able to withstand in the future.

Why the situation in the East should not be considered a stalemate

According to the expert, what is happening now in Donbas has its pros and cons.

This is not a stalemate. But it can be called a stalemate in the sense that neither side will move forward. This is what we need, emphasises Roman Svitan.

According to a retired armed forces colonel, while a large part of the Russian army is blocked in the east, the armed forces continue to advance in the south, particularly on the left-bank of the Kherson region.

He also points out that the movement from Robotyno to Tokmak and Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia can be considered really promising.

Roman Svitan emphasises that the events at the front can be considered the basis for the liberation of Crimea.

We have repeatedly said that the de-occupation of Donbas is possible only after the peninsula is returned. During the winter, we have a task to try to destroy the Russian rear from Moscow to Rostov, or better yet, to Sochi, using long-range weapons. And in the spring, after the arrival of the aircraft, we will start moving on, Svitan stressed.
