The number of casualties in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia as a result of the massive Russian attack on 29 December has risen again. A day of mourning has been declared in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro and Odesa.
In Ukraine, number of civilians, killed by Russian attack, increased
Anatoliy Kurtev, the secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, and Yurii Malashko, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration (RMA), reported that the death toll in Zaporizhzhia had risen to nine. As of 29 December, the death toll was eight.
A day of mourning for the dead has been declared in Zaporizhzhia today.
Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa RMA, has declared mourning in Odesa, where four people were killed. Six people were killed in Dnipro, where the head of the Dnipro RMA, Serhiy Lysak, declared mourning.
According to the latest reports, 13 people were killed in Kyiv. Four more bodies were recovered from the rubble of a warehouse in the Shevchenkivskyi district.
What is known about missile attack on Ukraine on December 29
On the morning of 29 December, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Ukraine. They fired 122 missiles and 36 drones at Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro, Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.
Residential buildings, multi-storey buildings, a maternity hospital, schools, kindergartens, and a shopping centre were destroyed. Ukrainian air defence systems shot down 87 cruise missiles and 27 attack drones. More than 30 civilians were killed and over 160 injured.
US President Joe Biden has strongly condemned Russia's shelling of Ukraine. The head of the White House noted that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is trying to destroy Ukraine and its people, and stressed that Putin must be stopped.
Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Sergiy Kyslytsya, said that as long as Russia is able to destroy the authority and integrity of the Security Council, it will be free to kill innocent people in Ukraine and beyond.
