Police in Nepal detained 10 people who lured unemployed young people into the Russian army for the war against Ukraine.

Recruiters for the Russian army were detained in Nepal

The police said that the detainees charged the youth vast sums of money for tourist visas and then sent them to the Russian military.

Kathmandu District Police Chief Bhupendra Khatri said ten people were in custody. They have been detained for the past few days.

We are discussing the case with government lawyers and will take it to court, Khatri told Reuters.

It is not yet known when the detainees will appear in court.

This is a case of human smuggling... organized crime, Khatri added.

According to him, the detainees illegally took up to $9,000 from each person and sent them to Russia on "visit (tourist) visas", mainly through the UAE. Then, they were recruited into the Russian army.

Nepal asked the Russian Federation not to recruit its citizens

This week, Nepal asked Moscow not to recruit its citizens into the Russian army and to return about 200 Nepalis from its armed forces.

This happened after six Nepali citizens who were serving in the Russian army were killed.

Nepal also asked Russia to pay compensation to the families of the dead Nepali citizens.

Reuters writes that Nepalese soldiers, known as Gurkhas, are known for their bravery and fighting skills. They served in the British and Indian armies after India gained independence in 1947.

On December 4, Ukrainian journalist Andrii Tsaplienko published a video of the interrogation of a captured 22-year-old Nepali man. He said he allegedly studied in the Russian Federation, and his visa had expired.

The Russian army promised him 195,000 rubles ($2104), but only 4,000 rubles ($43) were paid.
