The temporary protection mechanism, introduced by the decision of the EU Council in March 2022, initially for one year, was again extended for another year — until March 4, 2025. Therefore, the validity period of temporary protection certificates issued in Poland has been extended to the same period.
Poland will help Ukrainian refugees
Poland extended the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian citizens who arrived in Poland after February 24, 2022, and remained there for one year.
It states in the press release of the Polish government.
As noted, the temporary protection mechanism introduced by the EU Council's decision in March 2022, initially for one year, was again extended for another year — until March 4, 2025. Therefore, the validity period of the temporary protection certificates issued until now has been developed for the same period.
It is emphasised that these provisions do not provide legal grounds for replacing already issued certificates in connection with the extension of temporary protection. The documents contain a corresponding note regarding extending their validity following the Law. Therefore, foreigners who have already received permits can continue to use them as residence documents confirming their legal status.
The government of the Republic of Poland noted that foreigners whom the Law does not cover on Assistance to Citizens of Ukraine in connection with the armed conflict on the territory of this country, and they belong to the category of displaced persons listed in the implementing decision of the Council of the EU on the existence of a mass influx of displaced people from Ukraine, can use temporary protection on the territory of Poland. In such a case, the certificate issued by the Office for Foreigners confirms using temporary protection.
The EC proposes to extend the protection of Ukrainians in the EU
The European Commission notes that such a move will provide certainty and support for more than 4 million people who benefit from protection across the EU.
The EU Council must now adopt this Commission proposal.
As mentioned before, the EU activated the Directive on temporary protection on March 4, 2022, by unanimous decision of the member states.
The European Commission believes that the reasons for temporary protection remain and that temporary protection should, therefore, be continued as a necessary response to the current unstable situation, which does not yet facilitate the safe and sustainable return of those benefiting from temporary protection in Europe.
As long as it takes, the European Union will support Ukraine. This solidarity has been embodied in providing immediate protection status for all fleeing the Russian war. Today, when the war continues, we ask the member states to come together again and extend the temporary protection for another year, — said EC Vice President Margaritis Schinas.
