Portugal allocated €100 million to the Czech Republic's initiative to supply ammunition to Ukraine from countries not members of the European Union.

Portugal supports the Czech initiative

The Portuguese MOD said the initiative aims to deliver the most ammunition of various calibres, particularly 155 millimetres, as quickly as possible.

The use of these munitions on the battlefield has reached extremely high levels, making it vital and urgent for Ukraine to obtain additional munitions to respond to Russia's continued and more intense attacks, the agency said in a statement.

The Ministry of Defence was reminded that Portugal supplied Ukraine with:

  • Leopard 2A6 tanks

  • over 40 M113 armored personnel vehicles and medical versions of these vehicles; artillery ammunition and light ammunition;

  • howitzers and various weapons;

  • speed boats and unmanned aerial vehicles;

  • medical and sanitary facilities, as well as means of communication;

  • generators for electricity production;

  • clothing, uniforms and individual combat equipment.

Czech initiative to purchase ammunition for Ukraine

At the Munich conference in mid-February, Czech President Petr Pavel announced that his country had found 800,000 shells ready for purchase outside the European Union.

So far, we have found half a million 155 mm shells and 300,000 122 mm shells, which we can send (to Ukraine) in a few weeks if we have the necessary funds.

The initiative will cost $1.5 billion.

About fifteen countries already support the "Czech plan": Belgium and the Netherlands have promised to allocate 200 and 100 million euros, respectively. France, Latvia, Germany, Canada, and Norway also publicly joined the initiative.

On March 7, Pavel stated that the Czech Republic had collected the necessary funds to purchase 800,000 shells for Ukraine.
