Portugal extends temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees

The Portuguese government has extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until the end of 2024. The relevant resolution was adopted on February 22.

Portugal extends protection for refugees from Ukraine

Ukrainian citizens will be able to stay in Portugal until January 2025.

Previously, the country extended protection to Ukrainians for six months, Observador reports.

Portugal approved the extension until the end of 2024 of the validity period of documents on temporary protection for refugees from Ukraine. The resolution extends residence permits for another ten months, not six months, as the previous two times.

Temporary protection in Portugal is granted automatically to refugees from Ukraine, the first time it lasted for a year. The government then continued temporary protection for Ukrainians in March and September 2023.

According to the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, as of January 2023, Portugal granted 59,532 temporary protection permits to people from Ukraine. However, 1,566 of these refugees later applied to have their status revoked.

According to the latest Eurostat data, 58,800 refugees from Ukraine benefit from temporary protection in Portugal.

Temporary protection for Ukrainians in EU countries

On February 21, Slovakia extended temporary protection for Ukrainians. Refugees will be able to use the status until March 4, 2025.

The Lithuanian government also extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2025. They also developed a period when getting a job without passing a language exam was possible.

The Sejm of Poland voted for the resolution on the extension of temporary protection for Ukrainian war refugees until June 30, 2024.

Ukrainians who arrived in Poland between February 24, 2022 and March 4, 2024, can use temporary protection for another six months. In addition, the Seim extended tax benefits to those who provide humanitarian aid until the end of the year.
