Romanian farmers again blocked the truck movement at the Siret border checkpoint, opposite the Ukrainian border checkpoint "Porubne" in the Chernivtsi region.

Farmers in Romania renewed the blockade of Ukrainian trucks

On January 13, Romanian farmers also blocked the Siret checkpoint. According to Romanian media, they demanded subsidies from the government to compete with Ukrainian products. The blockade lasted for six hours and was lifted in the evening.

Since November 23, 2023, Polish farmers have protested at the Medyka checkpoint. They only pass a few trucks per hour.

On December 23, the Polish Minister of Agriculture, Czeslaw Siekierski, came to the protesters at the border and assured them their demands would be realised, so the farmers suspended the strike.

What is known about the European farmers' demands regarding the import restrictions of Ukraine's agricultural products

The joint statement states that if the duty-free import mechanism of Ukrainian agricultural products to the EU, introduced in May 2022, is preserved, the existence of European farmers will be at risk.

We are concerned that if this mechanism remains in its current form, without adaptation, the survival of whole European manufacturers will be put at risk, the document says.

European agricultural producers demand naval and river corridors to transport Ukrainian grain to other countries.

They also demand strengthening phytosanitary control at the borders.

In addition, it is proposed to introduce mechanisms that would help determine the destination of Ukrainian products and ensure that they get there.

At the same time, they propose introducing thresholds for importing these products based on the average values of 2021-2022. So that everything that exceeds these norms can only pass through the EU before being exported to third countries.
