Russia to be excluded from the Danube Commission amid the missile and drone attacks on Ukraine

Dmytro Kuleba
Russian Federation

The Danube Commission decided to exclude Russia from the organization because of its missile and drone attacks on the Lower Danube region.

The Danube Commission will exclude the Russian Federation from its membership

This decision was made during the 100th anniversary session under the Ukrainian presidency.

The Ukrainian MFA chief, Dmytro Kuleba, noted that Russia must leave the Commission by February 29, 2024. Otherwise, the members of the Commission will no longer recognize their obligations to Russia under the Convention on the Regime of Navigation on the Danube.

The decision is a response to violating the principles of free and safe navigation on the Danube.

In addition, it is based on the resolution of the Commission dated March 17, 2022, which rejected the powers of the Representative of Russia in the State Council and all his deputies, suspended the Russian delegation from participating in all meetings, and made a decision to dismiss citizens of the Russian Federation from diplomatic and administrative and technical positions in the Secretariat Commission.

I am grateful to the members of the Danube Commission for this bold and principled step, Kuleba said.

The Danube Commission is an international intergovernmental organization established by the Convention on the Regime of Navigation on the Danube, signed in Belgrade on August 18, 1948.

Members of the Danube Commission are Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine and Croatia. Ukraine became a member of the Danube Commission in 1949.

In November, for the first time, a Russian representative was not elected to the UN International Court of Justice, the executive boards of the International Maritime Organization, UNESCO, and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

In early December, the Russian Federation was expelled from the board of the International Maritime Organization.
