On March 11, 2022, it became known that the mayor of the city, Ivan Fedorov, was kidnapped by Russian invaders.
In a few days, he was rescued thanks to a special operation, exchanging him for 9 Russian conscripts.
At the beginning of Feb. 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed Fedorov as the head of Zaporizhzhia кьA.
