What preceded it
On the evening of January 14, messages appeared on Russian and Ukrainian Telegram channels about the downing of a Russian reconnaissance aircraft A-50 and damage to an enemy Il-22M air command post, on the morning of January 15 this information was partially confirmed by the commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykola Oleschuk, as well as sources of "Ukrainian Pravda".
On the morning of January 15, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, confirmed that the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine shot down two important Russian vessels — a long-range radar detection aircraft and an air control post.
According to the Air Force, the Il-22 air control post of the Russian occupiers still survived the damage, but cannot be restored.
The publication Defense Express notes that it was previously believed that it was impossible to destroy the A-50. These types of aircraft avoid the front edge of the front line and stay as far as possible from the enemy's air defense zone.
Russia had only nine such aircraft in service (three of them A-50 and six A-50U).
