Opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in Russia.

It was reported to the Federal Department of Corrections (FSIN) in the Yamalo-Nenetsky Autonomous region in Russia.

After a walk, Navalny felt unwell and almost immediately lost consciousness, reports the regional FSIN. The emergency paramedics confirmed the death of the convict, russian media cites.

Alexei Navalny's lawyer, Leonid Solovyov, also commented on the situation:

According to the decision of the family of Alexei Navalny, I do not comment on anything at all. Now we're trying to get know more. Alexei had a [meeting with his] lawyer on Wednesday. Everything was fine then.

What is known about Navalny's imprisonment

In August 2023, the Moscow City Court found Navalny guilty of creating an extremist community, calling for extremism and financing it.

The politician was sentenced to 19 years in a special regime colony.

Navalny was serving a sentence on fraud charges in the Russian Vladimir region.

He wrote that in September 2023, as "incorrigible", he was transferred to a single room of the cell type for a year — "the most severe of all possible punishments in colonies of all kinds."
