Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's decree on granting Russian citizenship to abducted Ukrainian children is yet another proof of the terrorist country's crimes against Ukraine.

Reaction of Ministry of Health to "passportisation" of abducted Ukrainian children

As the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed, Putin's decision is aimed at meeting the demographic needs of the terrorist country to continue the war against Ukraine. In particular, it grossly violates the legislation of our country, international law and the rights of children who were forcibly transferred to the territory of Russia.

Russia's actions violate international humanitarian law and are null and void. The introduction of the relevant rule is aimed at depriving abducted children of the opportunity to return to their homeland.

The real value of this decree is that it will become another proof of Russia's crimes against Ukraine, the forced assimilation of Ukrainian children and attempts to deprive them of their own homeland, the Foreign Ministry added.

The Ministry also called on the International Criminal Court to take into account the dictator's actions to transfer children from one ethnic group to another, including by forcibly granting them citizenship, which is a sign of genocide.

In particular, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs insists that the international community execute the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) as soon as possible.

As a reminder, on 4 January, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree according to which abducted Ukrainian children can easily obtain Russian citizenship under the compulsion of the aggressor country.

According to the decree, orphans and children deprived of parental care who are citizens of Ukraine can obtain Russian citizenship by the dictator's personal decision, without taking into account all legal requirements.

What is known about abduction of Ukrainian children

On the occasion of Children's Day in 2023, the Online.UA team presented the documentary project Crippled Childhood, which tells the stories of Ukrainian children who were forcibly deported and abducted to Russia.

In the film Crippled Childhood, children and their parents openly share their stories: some of them have been in captivity, some have been forcibly taken to a "rehabilitation camp", some have been separated from their parents during so-called filtration measures.
