Fico threatens to block Ukraine's accession to NATO
In a comment to the journalists of the "InfoVojna" publication, the Slovak Prime Minister stated that Ukraine's entry into the Alliance could allegedly provoke the Third World War.
He also added that he expressed his position regarding Ukraine's membership in the Alliance during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
The Slovak prime minister also expressed the opinion that it will take years for Ukraine to join the European Union, and he is not against the country's European integration.
What is known about the protests against Fico's government in Slovakia
Mass protests against the Fico government's decision to amend the criminal code provisions began in more than ten cities in Slovakia.
According to AP, the government plans to reduce the number of law enforcement, in particular, anti-corruption agencies.
According to the Slovak government's proposal, these cases should be transferred to the regional departments' prosecutors, who have not dealt with such crimes for 20 years.
It is noted that the rallies organized by the opposition took place in the cities of Kosice, Prešov, Poprad, Banska Bystrica, Žilina, Nitra, Trnava, Trenčín, Spišská Nová Ves, Liptovský Mikuláš and Považská Bystrica. The crowd on the streets chanted — "Enough Fizo for us".
The leader of the leading opposition party "Progressive Slovakia" Michal Šimečka, believes that the changes "will lead to an amnesty for the mafia and the corrupt."
It is noted that the legislation adopted by the Fico government needs the approval of the parliament and the president. The three-party coalition has a majority in the parliament.
In particular, the planned changes in the legislation also envisage a softening of the punishment for corruption.
Fico's critics worry that his subsequent rise to power could see Slovakia abandon its pro-Western course and move toward Hungary for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
The report notes that since the Fico government came to power, some investigators and police officials handling top corruption cases have been suspended or fired.
